30th Annual Results

start w confettiUnder spectacular skies, a sun shining down as though Julie were looking down on the race cheering everyone on herself, the 30th Annual Julie Hughes Triathlon started with confetti and each runner carrying a pink carnation in hand. There were 105 participants of whom 58 people participated on 23 relay teams and 47 people completed the race individually. More than half of this year’s participants were youth and of those, 25 entries completed the race in the 12-and-under individual category. “It was really exciting to see so many young participants sign up to do the whole distance themselves!” said Kevin Knox, Race Director of the event. Harborview Triathlon Club from Juneau, returning for the second year, brought over 13 individual participants in the 12-and-under category.

The top finishers for 12-and-under individuals were Girls- Makayla Moore (44:17), Jasmin Holst(44:37), Maile Quigley(45:43) and Boys – Makai Saline (37:19), Kaelin Quigley(41:17), Khai Branham(44:33). Top youth relays, Girls – Adelaide Poulson, Darby Osborne, Mia Anderson (42:08), Boys- Hank Maxwell, Jason Young, Matthew Rice (43:32) and Mixed – Abby Saiz, Hunter Littlefield, Chloe Cagle (44:07).

Top finishers for individual women 13-18 Mary Pierce (1:33.35), 19-29 Ellen Sevigny (1:23.39), 30-39 Emily Davis (1:12:43), 40-49 Becca H. (1:27.31). Individual Men, 19-29 Jasen Newman (1:34.37), 30-39 Justin Dorn (1:04.50), 40-49 Mike Ferreira (59.19), 50+ Rich Forst (1:04.50). Top Adult relays – Men’s – Chris McGraw, Virgil Davis, Evan McArthur (1:02.57) Women’s – Shannon Fleming, Cindy Edwards, Skylar Moore (1:04.35) Family – Caleb, Camden and Susan Suarez (1:29.21), Corporate – Raven Radio’s Rob Woolsey, Emily Forman (1:12.06) and under 18 Mixed – Noah Blackmon, Hunter Taylor, Molly Blackmon (1:17.59).

Celebrating the 30th year of the triathlon was really special with teams and individuals dedicating their efforts to Julie’s memory and in honor of others loved ones. “It meant a lot to have Caleb and Camden be on a team with me,” remarked Susan Suarez, Julie’s sister, “and extra special having Tamryn out there on her team too.” Hunter Littlefield dedicated his team’s effort to his grandfather who is struggling with health issues right now, presenting his race number to him later that morning as a gift. Others ran to celebrate their own cancer survivorship.

Pink carnations were Julie’s favorite flowers. As a tribute to her, each runner carried one as they left the starting line and left it on the bench dedicated to her on the Sea Walk along Crescent Harbor.

The traditional 1st Place medal given to Bill and Carol Hughes in Julie’s honor was met with cheers and even a few tears. Coming together as a community for the 30th consecutive year was truly meaningful for all who were there participating in the race, cheering people along, or helping out by volunteering to ensure course safety.
